The Great Plains Native Asset Building Coalition is comprised of several key organizations and institutions that are leading innovators in the Native asset building movement in the Great Plains region. These entities have spearheaded cutting-edge strategies that improve the lives of Native peoples.
Four Bands Community Fund
Four Bands is the leading organization on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in the areas of small business development, business lending, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship education. Their expertise lies in three core program areas: a) Business & Entrepreneur Development – offers loan products and customized services aimed at creating businesses and developing entrepreneurial skills; b) Mazaska K’sapa Nitawa (Your Money Wisdom) — helps develop sound financial management practices for adult individuals and families; and c) Wicoicage Sakowin kin un Wicakagapi (Building for the Seventh Generation ) — builds long-term employment and life skills of youth. The mission of Four Bands Community Fund is to create economic opportunity by helping people build strong and sustainable small businesses and increase their financial capability to create assets and wealth.
Hunkpati Investments is a community development financial institution (CDFI) providing basic financial services and helping individuals overcome the barriers currently preventing access to capital. Hunkpati Investments was organized in the spring of 2009 by a local, Native American Board of Directors to create and facilitate economic activity on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation by partnering with tribal members to develop native ideas. In that short period of time, Hunkpati Investments has thrived in fulfilling its mission: to provide financial opportunities to stimulate economic development on the Crow Creek Sioux Indian Reservation, promoting self-sufficiency, self-determination, and an enhanced quality of life for the reservation community. Hunkpati Investments provides entrepreneurship support and financing, as well as various asset building services and products.
Lakota Federal Credit Union
Lakota Federal Credit Union’s mission is to provide quality financial services conveniently located at home on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in a helpful, professional and respectful manner and to provide effective tools for its members, the Oglala Lakota people, to save, plan, and provide for their futures. It offers a variety of tools to help people of the Pine Ridge Reservation build brighter futures, such as savings accounts, consumer loans, and check cashing services.
Lakota Funds is a community development financial institution (CDFI) leading an economic resurgence of the Oglala Lakota Oyate on the Pine Ridge Reservation through culturally appropriate strategies reigniting the traditional Lakota spirit of productivity, commerce, and trade. Lakota Funds plays a vital role in improving life for Oglala Lakota people by placing capital with new and growing businesses on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and offering courses that build the financial management skills of Lakota individuals, families, and youth.
Mazaska Owecaso Otipi Financial
Founded in 2004, Mazaska Owecaso Otipi Financial (Mazaska) creates homeownership opportunities for the members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe living on, or in the communities adjacent to, the Pine Ridge Reservation. Mazaska is a Native community development financial institution (CDFI) that provides housing loans and assistance to their clients. Their mission is to create safe and affordable housing opportunities by providing loans, development services and financial insight to empower our Native people to build assets and create wealth.
Pine Ridge Area Chamber of Commerce
The Pine Ridge Area Chamber of Commerce is an association of business people working together to make the Pine Ridge area a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family. The Chamber is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to create, sustain, and enhance Indian-owned businesses, therefore improving the quality of life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Applying the Lakota values of Honesty, Wisdom, Respect, Courage, Fortitude, Responsibility, and Generosity to the economic setting, the Chamber appreciates both new and existing businesses in the Pine Ridge Reservation area, as well as our neighbors who live among us.
Sinte Gleska University
Sinte Gleska University provides a model for Indian-controlled education. It is an institution governed by people rooted to the reservation and culture, concerned about the future, and willing to work to see the institution grow. It provides each Lakota person the opportunity to pursue an education and does so in a way that is relevant to career and personal needs. Sinte Gleska University graduates will help determine the future development and direction of the Tribe and its institutions. The mission of Sinte Gleska University is to plan, design, implement and assess post-secondary programs and other educational resources uniquely appropriate to the Lakota people in order to facilitate individual development and tribal autonomy.
